Zynga would like to inform you that it is still very much alive.
Despite a rough week of bad press, Zynga launched a new game today called Gems With Friends, an arcade-style iOS title that marks a departure from their typical word-based mobile games. The game is available in Canada right now and will rollout to the rest of the world in the coming weeks.
Players must combine gemstones of similar colors to score points while racing against the clock to earn top scores. It features the same addictive gameplay of a classic arcade game like Puzzle Bobble or Bust-a-Move, games you may have remembered from your old pizza parlor days. Each match of Gems with Friends consists of three rounds with an opponent, and each round last two minutes.
The game is developed by a subsidiary of Zynga, a developer called Zynga with Friends, which was founded in 2008 by brothers Paul and David Bettner. The company is famous for—you guessed it—Words with Friends.
The mobile game’s release seems strategic as the Zynga fields criticism for its large dependence on the Facebook platform and troubling financial reports from its mobile efforts.
Gems with Friends is launching in the coming days in the United States for iOS only, and Zynga has announced plans to eventually develop an Android version. As every With Friends game, this new title uses Facebook connect which allows you to connect with other players.
