Don’t be fooled by the name of today’s free game, Mini Golf MatchUp: you need not match any things together, whether in threes or otherwise. Instead, the “MatchUp” portion refers to the social competition — you will be matched up with opponents from your Facebook friends, or the game’s own network, or simply at random. The “Mini Golf” part, though, that’s quite accurate; there’s plenty of putting and obstacle-dodging and ricochets to be had, and it’s quite solid. Simple drag-to-putt mechanics and a mix of simple and tricky hole designs give this app a few nice wrinkles.
Mini Golf MatchUp takes the convenience of asynchronous multiplayer and includes some of the better aspects of real-time competition, including instant replays of your opponents’ putts, allowing you to get an idea of how to approach a course when you’re the second player to go (you and your opponent alternate for first shot privileges). There’s also a bit of strategy to consider when planning your shots: the game is not scored by stroke, but by points. More points are obviously awarded for fewer putts, but you can also rack up bonuses by collecting gems that rest off of the ‘ideal’ path… or, you can shoot for a hole-in-one, which doubles your score for the next hole.
The game is free by default, but as with many AppGratis bonuses, downloading and playing it today will earn you a pile of in-game currency, good for a few mulligans. Give it a shot!
