When I was but a lad – a mere stripling, really – I read comic books in primitive, non-digital form, blowing my allowance at the local comic shop in exchange for tales of mutants, monsters, and mayhem. Marvel was my brand of choice, and I was an X-Men fanatic. So, today’s gratis app, MARVEL: War of Heroes started strong by immediately peppering me with some high-quality art of Wolverine to appreciate. It got a little confusing from there – and that’s coming from a guy who has no problems with things like heroes coming back from the dead except they’re actually a clone from a dark alternate timeline.
MARVEL: War of Heroes is, at its heart, a trading card game (TCG). The player collects cards of their favorite Marvel icons, bands them together in combinations for the best possible stats and powers, and smashes them up against their opponent’s deck. Having not played a proper TCG in a while, it was a little daunting to have so much information thrown at me so quickly, trying to keep track of whose ATK was better than whose DEF, etc. (There is an AppGratis reward of in-game items for completing the tutorial today, so I got that far, at least.)
Once through the fast-moving infodump, however, there is clearly a robust and heavily supported game waiting for players – including story missions with little comic-style intros, timed community challenges, and a wide array of opponents. Plus, as mentioned earlier, if you’re a Marvel geek, you’ll certainly get some mileage out of ogling the character art and info on the hero cards.
You can steal MARVEL: War of Heroes for free by checking AppGratis today, and Spider-Man won’t even punch your teeth out.
