The way I see it, hungry squids come in two flavors: adorable and terrifying. Depending on how they are portrayed, they tend to appear either as cute, colorful, squishy little critters who just want to float around and be happy, or as horrible, tentacular, Lovecraftian monstrosities who want to consume nothing less than your soul and sanity. Today’s free iOS game, HungrySquid, seems to have it both ways. The first time you play, HungrySquid presents a startlingly elaborate backstory to its casual puzzle game, telling the tale of space-dwelling squids who are searching the cosmos for a dead planet to call their own. Space squids on a dead planet. If that’s not Cthulhu-esque, I’m not sure what is.
But then, when you actually play, and you see the neon pastel squids hanging out on the game board, and hear the soothing music and the simple, cute graphics… awww. Who’s a hungry little space squid? Yes, you are! It takes a moment to get the hang of HungrySquid, particularly since the game takes the time to tell you the story but not to explain the gameplay, but a quick browse through the “Help” screen and a few tries at the opening puzzles will set you on the path to your dead space squid planet (I think).
