Free-to-Play games have been around for a long time now, showing the world that you can make remarkable amounts of money with something you refer to as “free.” These addict-them-first-and-then-let-them-pay-you titles have become pervasive across PC and mobile platforms, but there’s been one holdout — the staunchly money-based Xbox 360, which you’d think would have had the system figured out long ago. After all, pretty much every single XBLA title has followed one form of F2P presentation: the demo version. Download the teaser for free, pay up to unlock the whole deal. Today, though, one game has finally pierced that particular veil: Happy Wars, from TriplePoint client Toylogic, lets players download and play in full-length online multiplayer matches, for free, forever. Of course, if they want to buy a few in-game perks while they’re at it, well, that’d be just fine.
From the press release:
Happy Wars is an action-packed multiplayer experience with frantic 30-player matches, a colorful comic-book style, and accessible class-based combat.
Once they’ve downloaded Happy Wars, players can jump straight into the action and start customizing their characters, either by earning loot in battle, using Happy Stars earned in combat, or by purchasing Happy Tickets for the in-game item shop. No matter how they gear up, all Happy Wars players have complete access to the game’s three distinct classes and dozens of skills, as well as the ability to earn the most powerful items without paying.
As a special launch promotion, everything in the Item Shop is also marked down 20 percent until October 15, so players should be sure to pick up anything fun that catches their eye this weekend!
So there you have it. You can play an F2P game on your Xbox for the very first time. If that doesn’t make you happy enough to go out and slaughter your enemies in the happiest dang war ever, well, I don’t think there’s any pleasing you.
