Wiki Hunt: 6 Degrees of Anything

Casual, Handheld, iPad, iPhone, Mobile

At one point or another in our interweb adventures, we’ve all found ourselves lost in Wikipedia. After reading one page, a related link at the bottom catches your eye. Click. While reading that, you may find an interesting keyword. Click. Before you know it, you’ve gone through quite a number of articles. Well, now there’s an app that makes a game out of that process: Wiki Hunt.

At just $0.99, you can have this addicting app on your iProduct. Luckily for me, I had enough credit on my iTunes account to buy it. Wiki addicts and trivia nerds in general will not be disappointed. The concept of the game is similar to 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, only instead of relying on your movie intellect to get to Mr. Footloose, you use Wikipedia to reach a random target article.

Wiki Hunt comes with 3 game modes: Random, Custom, and Jesus. The aptly named Random chooses 2 random articles to begin and end with.  Being a total newb at this game, I opted for the Custom, a mode in which I could choose the beginning and end articles. At the risk of exposing further geekdom, I went from Joss Whedon to Harry Potter in 11 clicks. I mean, do you really expect me to get from The Dead Season (The Hardy Boys) to Glyptorhagada kooringensis in Random mode (yes, I really did get this)? I thought so. The last mode is Six Clicks to Jesus. Pretty self-explanatory.

Wiki Hunt automatically searches for the shortest solution when you begin the game. If you like it quick and dirty, there is a Search feature that helps you find keywords within Wikipedia. I, for one, like to read through the articles and try to make a connection. Sometimes the articles may seem impossible, but trust me, most times they’re a lot more related than you think. If you feel like bragging, the app allows you to log onto Twitter to share your latest victory. Overall, Wiki Hunt is a fun, addicting game that challenges both your ingenuity and patience. Not only that, it’s a fun way to learn about all sorts of random things.
