Want to Charge an iPad? Bet on the Wall Charger (UPDATED)

iPad

MediaBistro’s Todd Ogasawara picked up an iPad this past weekend and found something rather interesting when attempting to charge it via USB. Due to Todd’s computer being slightly older, the iPad refuses to charge off of its USB ports. This is rather different than what we have been used to with other Apple devices such as the iPhone or iPod.

The message you receive when attempting to charge the iPad with an incompatible computer is “Not Charging” which sounds simple and blunt enough. The solution is to only use the wall charger which will work every time, as Todd found.

UPDATE: According to commenter “mbacas,” the iPad will charge when the screen is off and the iPad is in standby mode. Thanks mbacas for that awesome tip!

Actually the message is “Not Charging”. That's only when the display is on. Turn the display off and let the iPad sit connected for a while, you'll see that the iPad's battery percent has increased.

Hey, thanks for the note. I'll amend my post with this information.

Your welcome. Here is a link to Apple's information on this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4060

“The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.”
