On the official Twitter blog today, Twitter announced the availability of Twitter for iPhone, the first official Twitter app available on the iTunes App store. According to Twitter, the move to put an official app on the store was to improve how Twitter was perceived on the iPhone.
Comprehensive analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes App Store showed very plainly that people were looking for an app from Twitter—we didn’t have one so they generally got confused and gave up. Obviously, we saw room for improvement.
The app seems to feature a clean, nice interface that seems to fit in with the rest of the iPhone Twitter applications. An interesting feature is that you do not need to have a Twitter account to view trending topics, top tweets or view other users timelines. Of course, you can also sign up for a new account right from the app as well.
The app replaces the popular Tweetie app and is free to download from the app store now. Below are some screenshots of the new application.
