Location-Based, Mobile, Social, Twitter

Remember Facebook’s alleged location features that are coming soon? Well, Twitter is moving in that area too following CEO Evan Williams’ announcement at Chirp. Now, Twitter is not a stranger to Geo-Location features in that they have had mapping features on for a month or so and has given geo-location features to developers late last year.

As it is, the location features will start matching the latitude and longitude to actual places on a map. The new feature is called Points of Interest. Once you start showing your location and finding points nearby, it’s not that much different outside of points and badges.

Although, Twitter claims that their goal is not to do check-ins. According to Williams: “We are not looking to duplicate the functionality of Foursquare and Gowalla. When you are tweeting about a place, it is kind of a checkin, but we are more interested in the content about that place.”
