That’s right – after weeks of teasing us with the news that Las Vegas would be coming as a playable location in the game, Zynga has finally launched the city in Mafia Wars. You may or may not be happy to know, however, that the gameplay here has been changed a bit, so things won’t flow like you may have originally expected.
First and foremost, you’ll be using a new kind of currency in Vegas – appropriately, the currency are Chips, and instead of holding them in the Bank, you’ll store them in a Vault with a maximum capacity of $100,000 in Chips.
Jobs are separated into Districts, with the first District being “North Las Vegas.” The first time you login to Vegas, you’ll be given a brief tutorial like the one below that introduces you to the new map (or tree) system of navigation.
For North Las Vegas, you’ll see an Energy Path and a Fight Path. The Energy path is best for those who have a lot of energy to burn, while the Fight Path is for those with lots of strength and stamina. In further districts, you’ll see a third path, the Social Path, which is best for those with a large, active mafia that can help you finish jobs, as well as help contribute to your job mastery.
On the left side of the screen, you’ll see a navigation tree that shows you what jobs you’ll need to complete in order to unlock jobs further down the path. In this particular example, you’ll need to complete the “Move Your Crew into a Safe House” mission before anything else, as it unlocks the next mission in the tree. Completing this mission allows for you to unlock missions further branches down the tree, and so on.
The same goes for the Fight Path, which has a similarly designed tree, but with different steps to unlock the same missions. If you master all of the jobs in both the Energy and Fight paths, you’ll receive Bronze Mastery, and will unlock the Silver Mastery level for that District. As you might have guessed, completing both tiers again on Bronze will grant you Silver mastery, and so on.
Regardless of which path you choose, all routes lead to a boss battle at the end. Defeat the boss in North Las Vegas, and you’ll unlock Paradise City, or District 2. As of this writing, there are six Districts to eventually unlock and explore.
As with most things in Mafia Wars, it’s easiest to learn your way around by actually playing the game. Head over to the game’s page on Facebook to do just that!
