Who remembers Raiden X at the pizza parlor back in the nineties? Here, let me refresh your memory. The classic arcade spaceship shooter remains a fun genre that’s easy to hop into yet difficult to master. It has seen new life in the independent PC game Jamestown, and Starcraft II even included a mini-game aboard Jim Raynor’s spaceship.
The latest entry into the franchise is the upcoming mobile title A Space Shooter Blitz which is being prepared as a Facebook game. Developed by Canada-based Frima Studio, the new game doesn’t make any apologies for its difficulty. The player must guide the spaceship through waves of oncoming enemies and swarms of projectile weaponry while collecting powerups that boost your own offensive and defensive abilities.
You have to shoot down as many enemies as possible to rack up your points, which links up to a leaderboard so you can check your skill level against other players. A Space Shooter Blitz adds a dastardly twist to score generation: If you take even a single hit, that impressive combo score you accrued is suddenly reduced to zero. That will make you think twice before boosting forward to grab that powerup floating just out of reach.
Provided they don’t get shot, players can use their in-game credits to purchase power-ups and shields to bring to each session. The game also uses Facebook Connect so you can keep track of your progress even if you play offline.
We’re looking forward to seeing this throwback title hit Facebook, Android and iOS devices this September 28.
