The tourist-travel themed virtual world There.com will be closing its virtual doors on March 9, after seven years in service.
As reported by Games Beat, the game, which allowed users vast customization options in terms of avatar and item creation (clothing, buildings, furniture, cars, etc.), was hit hard by the downturn in the economy, and that, regardless of an increasing in-game population, the revenue had stopped flowing in such a way as to keep the world afloat.
Like most other social games, There.com allowed users to purchase premium virtual currency called Therebucks, with the company preparing to refund, in full, any purchases of Therebucks made after February 1.
Chief executive of Makena Technologies, Michael Wilson, retains high praise for the game, regardless of its current state: “We believe that all of this together made a world which was, well, like “real life”, with just the right level of unreality thrown in.”
