Beginning this Sunday, Target (a TriplePoint client) will be the first retailer to carry Facebook Credits gift cards in stores nationwide. This is great news for social gamers who can’t (or prefer not to) use a credit card to make online purchases, but still want to use premium virtual currency in Facebook games and apps.
“Facebook Credits gift cards will be available at Target stores nationwide and on Target.com beginning Sept. 5, in increments of $15, $25 and $50. The $15 Facebook Credits gift card has been created exclusively for Target.”
This is also great news for parents, taking some of the complication and tech out of online gaming. Moms and dads have plenty on their plate already – worrying about online safety, making sure homework still gets done, trying to beat their kids’ Bejeweled Blitz scores and whatnot…
It may not be the first to offer an alternative payment method for virtual good purchases, but Target knows how to make things mainstream friendly (and must-have). Beyond convenience, physical gift cards at Target will no doubt make Facebook Credits a hot holiday gift request, and a perfect stocking stuffer for anyone who plays Facebook games. That’s no small audience either – according to Inside Network, Americans will spend more than $1.6 billion in 2010 on virtual goods and social gaming.
“More than 200 million people play games on Facebook each month. Unlike most traditional games, social games on Facebook are free. Players can elect to purchase virtual goods or enhancements to their game experience. Facebook Credits are accepted by more than 150 leading social games and applications on Facebook, including Zynga’s FarmVille and Mafia Wars; CrowdStar’s Happy Aquarium; PopCap Games’ Bejeweled Blitz; Playdom’s City of Wonder; and EA Sports FIFA Superstars from Playfish.”
Target is clearly taking this social gaming thing seriously – you can already pick up gift cards for a plethora of popular Facebook and online games (plus iPhone App Store credits and more) at Target stores, and Facebook Credits are what we like to call icing on the cake.
Pretty cool, Target! I smell a frisky contest in the works… stay tuned to win!
