Although tower defense games are certainly not under-represented on the iPhone, Taito’s new title Mikado Defenders promises to add a new spin to the hugely popular genre. The game is set in feudal Japan during the Sengoku Era, an era that saw Japan torn apart by civil war. Players will be familiar with the basic gameplay: strategically deploy units like samurai foot soldiers and archers to protect your fortress from waves of enemies in the form of demons, while upgrading your fortress. However, Taito is offering up some special features, like the ability to summon powerful guardian spirits to turn the tide of battle in your favor. You will also get the chance to hire historical Samurai Commanders, like “One-Eyed Dragon” Masamune and Uesugi Kenshin, each with their own special abilities.
According to TouchMyApps, Taito is heavily emphasizing the “easy to learn, difficult to master” tagline of casual games. The top three items on the Other Feature list are simple gameplay, intuitive goals, and easy controls. In addition to the unusual setting, Mikado Defenders is sporting a unique art style reminiscent of Okami. The Taito house band Zuntata is providing the full soundtrack, but you will also have the option to customize your soundtrack via iPod Library Support.
No date has been announced yet for the release.
