Casual, Console, Handheld

Sega of America has announced a brand new adventure in the Sonic franchise entitled Sonic Colors. The game will see sonic racing around “theme park inspired worlds to rescue a colorful alien race from the clutches of Dr. Eggman.”

As seen in a company press release, we already know even more about the game’s backstory:

“An extraordinary amusement park has been seen orbiting around the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog, and rumours are spreading that an alien race of Wisps, who have a unique colorful energy, are being held captive there by the evil Dr. Eggman. Soon after arriving at the amusement park, Sonic discovers he is able to use these mysterious alien forces to help the Wisps escape!”

Depending on the color of Wisp that he frees, Sonic will be able to utilize their particular color energy. For two examples, with Yellow Drills, Sonic will be able to drill through the ground, creating new paths, while the Cyan Laser energy will allow for Sonic to move at incredibly high speeds as a laser.

Both the Nintendo Wii and DS versions will contain exclusive Wisp power-ups not found in the other game, but regardless of which you pick, you’ll be able to string together these power-ups to create a greater effect. Speaking of combinations, the Wii version of the game is set to combine the series’ classic 2D perspective with a 3D gameplay experience, while the DS version will be designed specifically to make use of the handheld’s dual screens.

As of this writing, Sonic Colors is set to be released sometime this holiday season. For more information, be sure to keep an eye on the game’s official website, where you can also watch a teaser trailer for the game.
