Rixty (a TriplePoint client) today announced a partnership with Embee Mobile to expand its redemption options to include mobile top up credits. Rixty already allows users to exchange their spare change at over 20,000 locations nationwide (including over 10,000 Coinstar kiosks) for pre-paid Rixty cards or RixtyCode, and use the credit online for virtual purchases in a slew of social and MMO games, like FarmVille or Puzzle Pirates to name a couple.
Under the new Embee deal, Rixty users can now use credits to buy mobile “top ups” as well, such as music, games messaging, Internet access and airtime. Top ups are used by over 60M prepaid mobile subscribers in the United States to add funds to their account. Embee Mobile supports mobile credits for 36 US mobile operators, including AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, Tracfone, Verizon and Virgin Mobile.
While I don’t mind using a credit card for online or mobile payments, there’s still definitely something cool about dumping my coin jar into CoinStar and taking a code home for virtual cash. A kid’s allowance could go a long way with Rixty – and save mom/dad the hassle and cost of microtransactions. “Want a new virtual goodie? Do your chores and we’ll go to the Rixty drop off.” :)
Russell Tillitt, CEO of Embee Mobile stated, “Rixty provides our customers a simple and easy way to fund their phone by exchanging spare change for minutes. By working with Rixty, we both expand our ability to reach new customers while providing current customers a new and convenient payment option that we think will be extremely popular.”
“Expanding redemption options of RixtyCode for mobile services is a complementary offering for the segment of Rixty users who want the maximum number of spending choices for their entertainment and communication,” said Ted Sorom, CEO of Rixty.
With mobile phones in the hands of ever-younger users (and texting as rampant as eating), the new Embee Mobile deal will no doubt have tweens (literally) pinching their pennies.
