Yesterday, Playdom, the creators of Facebook games like Social City, Tiki Resort and the new title Treetopia, announced their acquisition of Acclaim Games Inc. While the specific terms of the deal are not being disclosed by either party, it seems only fitting that Playdom would acquire Acclaim, which, as of late, has been hard at work on two Facebook games – RockFree, a guitar game that launched in March, and a new title that is set to release on the social network sometime this summer.
Prior to this, Acclaim made a name for itself by offering free-to-play casual games along with MMORPGs on its website. Both this and the company’s move to Facebook games led Acclaim CEO Howard Marks to the realization that Playdom and Acclaim were the perfect fit:
“Joining forces with Playdom is a natural fit. Both companies share the vision of connecting people globally through quality social games. Our deep expertise in building multi player online games and Playdom’s vast player community will help us bring out the next generation of social games.”
Marks will run the Acclaim studio for Playdom, while Acclaim’s Chief Technology Officer, Neil Malhotra, will act as Senior Technical Officer. John Pleasants, CEO of Playdom, has this to say about his new colleagues (via a company press release):
“Bringing Howard and Neil into Playdom strengthens our leadership and bolsters our position as an innovative games developer for the future. Howard and Neil have worked together building and operating games for many years, and their pipeline of new games is strong. We are also excited about opening our first Los Angeles based social game development studio which gives us access to all of the game development talent in Southern California. We look forward to big things from this team.”
We’ll be sure to bring you more news about Acclaim’s future Facebook offerings as it becomes available.
