While names like foursquare, Gowalla and even MyTown have become synonymous with the idea of iPhone check-in applications, a new fighter has entered the battle for genre supremacy in the form of PlacePop, a free app that is now available on the iPhone App Store.
PlacePop looks to take on the competition head-on, by not only allowing users to check into the locations they go worldwide, but by also providing a few unique features not found in similar apps.
First and foremost, each location that a users checks into has its own live feed (or “Pulse,” as the tool calls it), that updates in real time, giving you more information about your current location almost instantly. Likewise, an overall feed combines both the location-based feeds and the activities of your friends, so you can keep track of them as well.
PlacePop allows users to collect the locations they travel to, and earn medals (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum) based on subsequent check-ins to that location (3 check-ins earns you a bronze medal status, while platinum is reached at 50 check-ins, with steps in between).
In addition to receiving medals for continually checking-in to the same locations, the “game” offers real-world rewards As an example, one current promotion states that that first 100 users to earn a silver medal status (received upon 10 check-ins) at any Target store will receive a $10 gift card.
As you might expect, Placepop allows you to post your travels to Facebook and Twitter, as well as add photos and notes to location pages.
Another noteworthy feature is the ability to use the app’s website as a sort of side experience, where you can connect your Facebook account and add frequently visited locations to your online collection. You can even check-in to locations via the PlacePop website, which is perfect for those who use their laptops on the go, or for those non-iPhone mobile devices that can access the application’s page.
