One of the biggest announcements to be made during Apple’s Thursday iPhone OS 4 press conference was “Game Center”, an Xbox Live style gaming system. However, the iPhone currently already has a number of different gaming services out there–most notably OpenFeint.
You would think that OpenFeint would be disappointed with the Game Center announcement, but according to Jason Citron, OpenFeint’s CEO, they’re excited for Game Center.
“Apple is a key partner and we are delighted that they have validated the first half of the OpenFeint vision,” Citron said, as quoted by GameZebo. “We can now fulfill the second half: OpenFeint X and Virtual Goods based Social Games.”
For Citron, the real value is in monetizing their social games, which is not going to be harmed by Game Center. In fact, OpenFeint X will be completely compatible with Apple’s service.
“OpenFeint X is currently built on top of OpenFeint and in the future it will also sit on Apple’s Game Center social graph, achievements and leaderboards so developers and gamers don’t miss a step,” Citron said.
