Remember how we mentioned a few days ago how Nyko had a patent on being really great at making accessories for your game hardware? It turns out they’ve patented that, too — getting patents, that is. According to a bit of news yesterday, TriplePoint client Nyko has been awarded another patent; this one is for “systems for storing and charging video game controllers.” Given how many game controllers out there are typically wireless these days, and require either a steady diet of fresh batteries or a means of recharging, this is kind of a big deal.
From the release:
U.S. Patent No. 8,143,848 was granted to Nyko on March 27, 2012 and applies to video game controller charging systems that include, with other elements, a base to provide physical support for the system, and two or more docking bays on the base configured with opposing surfaces to receive and suspend the controllers while charging them through DC ports located conveniently between the surfaces. The patent will allow Nyko to protect its inventions in the event that other companies use Nyko’s technology without authorization to market similar products that infringe the patent.
Wow. Seriously, that is pretty huge.
