Nexus One Adds Multi-Touch

Google’s Nexus One might have a fancy-pants touch screen like the rest of the mobile world, but it would only let you poke or drag in one spot at a time. Until now, that is — Mashable (via Pocket Gamer) reports that a software update has been unleashed for the Nexus One that adds multi-touch support, letting users perform pinch-zooming on Google Maps, and opening up a new world for the device’s touch-screen gaming capabilities.

The upshot of this, of course, is that the Nexus One has had the hardware to manage multi-touch all along, but Google held back, not including the feature at launch. Mashable and others have speculated that this may have been to avoid a patenting lawsuit from Apple, but I happen to think they just wanted to keep the screens mostly smudge-free for CES.
