iPhone, Location-Based, Mobile

When you think of check-in applications on the iPhone, those apps that allow you to check-in to real world locations as you travel there, you probably think of options like Foursquare and Gowalla. That being the case, you might be surprised to learn (thanks to that the leader in the genre is neither of those games, and is, in fact, a relatively new face in the marketplace. The app? MyTown.

MyTown has been able to crush the competition in a mere two months after its release. In terms of specifics, games like Gowalla and Foursquare have been around for around a year and claim 100,000 and 300,000 users respectively. Impressive numbers sure, but MyTown already has a staggering 825,000 registered users! The reasoning behind this seems to come from MyTown’s inclusion of additional game-like elements that the competition doesn’t offer.

In addition to the game’s ability to unlock achievements and claim real-world locations as your own, MyTown offers a virtual store that allows users to purchase power-ups like city-stomping monsters (think Godzilla) that can add a bit of entertainment to your town’s visualization.

A future update (coming in the next few weeks) looks to help the game continue in its surprising dominance, by offering an increased level cap and the ability to send gifts to friends. Yes, you can make Godzilla stomp on your friends’ towns – I know that’s all that matters.
