iPhone Growing Much Faster than DS or PSP

Industry, iPhone, Mobile

Do you find it increasingly inconvenient to carry around a phone and handheld gaming device to handle gaming on the go? Well, you are definitely not alone as it appears that more and more people are simply switching to phones for their handheld gaming fix, mainly the iPhone.

Flurry, an analytics firm has analyzed sales data from NPD and Apple in 2008 which had iPhone at 5%, DS at 75% and PSP at 20%. In 2009, the numbers looked quite a bit different with the iPhone at a whopping 19%, PSP at 11% and DS at 70%. This is stunning to me simply because of the constantly rapid numbers of DS sales.

However, the big number comes from the iPhone’s share in overall console sales. In 2008, it was simply 1%; In 2009, 5%. That number is pretty insane considering the industry is worth $10 billion. These numbers astounded me simply because it shows just how quickly the iPhone is growing.
