Welcome to this edition of Mobile Monday Madness! We wrap-up the latest mobile news so you can get on with your Monday. Today, we have the new updated version of the Google Mobile App for iPhone that adds push notifications for both Gmail and Calendar and the news about Motorola’s Android phones and their software updates that are to be expected for the rest of this year.
The Google Mobile App has been on iPhone for quite a while now, and integrates most or all of Google’s main services into one, single app. The problems is that, it only really provided a landing for the different web apps, with no real integration into the iPhone app platform. Now, that has changed slightly with the latest update that allows users to add push notifications to Gmail and Calendar. Is this enough to make users switch from the stock Mail app? I suppose it all depends on your needs, but this is a step in the right direction.
Unfortunately, that’s about as far as Google can go without angering Apple. Apple would likely reject an official Gmail app because it replicates functions provided by the stock Mail app. Still, for the millions of Gmail users, this is excellent news.
We’ve informed you about the Motorola Droid receiving the Android 2.2 update, but we failed to mention the other Motorola phones that are also receiving updates in the near future. One glaring omission from these updates is the Motorola Devour, which will not receive any kind of upgrade.
The Backflip, Cliq and Cliq XT will receive Android 2.1 later in Q3 this year, proving that Motorola still believes that those phones are viable. Also listed is a reconfirmation that the Droid X will receive the 2.2 update “later this summer.” All I have to say about that is that the summer clock is ticking down so you may want to put a rush on that one, Motorola.
