Citing a lack of exhibitor interest, Leipziger Messe has canceled the public portion of Games Convention Online. Instead, the convention will now only focus on trade and business aspects, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

“This is a regrettable, but necessary decision,” said strategy director Silvana Kuerschner.

Last year the Games Convention Online event attracted 74 exhibitors. This year, the exhibitor list is slimmer, with more than 30 companies that are primarily focused on European and Asian online and mobile gaming.

“The GCO is focusing on online gaming and we think that’s right, because online is the growth market for games,” said Marc Wardenga, chairman of the GCO advisory council. “We continue to work closely with Leipziger Messe in order to consolidate the GCO as an industry platform.”

The Games Convention Online will take place July 8-10.
