GamersGate Opens the Door to Ad-Supported Free Game Service

Digital distribution is a near-perfect platform for gamers. People like getting games, and then playing those games. If it weren’t for the little detail of having to exchange money for those privileges, we’d be set for life. Thankfully, TriplePoint client GamersGate is taking a crack at a more perfect system. The digital distributor will be launching a new service called VOID next week, allowing gamers to play for free just by sitting through a few advertisements. Watch an ad, play a game, count your remaining money. Sounds pretty straightforward and extremely free.

From the press release:

GamersGate is set to officially launch its ad-supported free gaming service VOID on May 28, 2012. Over the past year, GamersGate has been working on the service, which will run parallel to the digital retailer’s usual business. After a long period of testing, VOID – the first ad-supported free gaming service of its kind – will be released in Scandinavia, the United States and Canada followed shortly by a UK launch.

The service is attractive enough that in Scandinavia, the entire ad inventory has already sold out through July. Thankfully you can get an inventory expansion at level 6.
