Directly after their pledge to start exploring non-game apps, FreeAppADay has put its first utilitarian selection up for grabs. Today’s free app is FluxTunes from Quokka Studios, a replacement music player for the iPhone’s built-in interface which seeks to make better use of the touch screen for easier navigation and playback.
The new controls do take a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve got the basics, FluxTunes does actually make it possible to navigate one’s music without even having to look at the screen. Navigate from track to track by sweeping one finger anywhere across the screen, as though you were navigating your photo library. Adjust the volume by dragging upwards or downwards. A few more complicated gestures, some involving three or four fingers, will allow you to perform functions like “More songs from this album” or start a shuffle mode.
