Another day, another free app; today’s offering is Ian Marsh’s Textropolis, a word game based within ever-expanding metropolitan cities that grow as you discover words hidden within them.
The gameplay is comparable to classic offerings like Text Twist, in that you enter a city and must make as many different words as possible, using the letters found within the city’s name. For instance, by traveling to Kingstown, you can make words like “knots” or “gowns,” and watch as you gain points, buildings sprout out from the ground and citizens comes to the city. Find enough words and another city, or level, is unlocked, and the process is repeated.
There are 30 different cities to travel to, and if you happen to not know the meaning of a word, the game includes a helpful dictionary allowing you to easily expand your vocabulary. Additional features include a hint system for new words (shake the iPhone to activate), and a bit of a social touch allowing you to send picture postcards of your best cities to friends.
