Today’s free app is Kingdom of Gnester, a critically acclaimed puzzle platformer from the folks at Another Castle Studios.
The game’s story is a light one, and is as such: Prince Gnester has been given a magical box called the Capacube, which has the power to help create kingdoms and protect them from harm. As a member of the royal family, Gnester must take his Capacube and fulfill his destiny of traveling across the dangerous wilderness to create a kingdom of his own.
The gameplay here is a fairly unique mix of traditional platformer and match-three puzzler. While this combination may be new to most, anyone who has played EA’s Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure on the Nintendo DS will feel right at home. The screen is split horizontally, with the top section housing the platforming section of the game (jumping over gaps, picking up collectibles, avoiding obstacles and enemies), while the bottom portion is a traditional match-three gem puzzler.
As it stands, the game comes with 30 levels, including three boss battles, but more “puzzle mode only” levels will be added in the future.
