iPhone, Mobile

Today’s free iPhone app at is iStart Spanish!, from Mirai Language Systems.

The app claims to be the only tutor-based Spanish language app on the iTunes App Store.  The app contains courses that will apparently take you from scratch (that is, having never studied Spanish before) all the way to a basic conversational level.

There are 50 lessons to progress through, which contain audio instruction from three different language professionals, containing over 5,000 sound files in all. Two of these are native Spanish speakers, and one is an English native, who helps with grammar explanations. With all three, you should be able to pick up on accent differences that will help you learn.

In addition to simply completing each lesson, iStart Spanish contains a “funware” system of badges, which function as achievements of sorts, rewarding you for passing certain lessons and learning throughout the course.

iStart Spanish asks users that have already studied Spanish to start at the last course to see if the app will be of any use to them.

If you’d like to give it a try, make sure to download the app while it’s free today.
