iPhone, Mobile

Today’s free iPhone app at is Zombie Shock, from Blue Wind.

The game places you in the role of a deranged scientist, who has been given the chance to escape from a New York City overrun by Zombies. The game is a side scroller of sorts, in that your character will forever be automatically running towards the right side of the screen as the environment scrolls by. Using a modified dual stick control scheme, you’ll be able to use the left stick to control your character’s location on the screen, and the right stick to control his aim.

Zombies will gain on your location fairly rapidly in each level, so you’ll have less than a few seconds to aim and fire, by tapping on the screen. Your guns require ammunition, so you’ll also have to keep track of how many bullets you have left, and tap the Reload button at the button of the screen when you run out.

You’ll collect money as you’re running, which can be used in between levels to purchase health upgrades (both those that simply refill your health bar and those that increase your maximum health, as examples), or new weapons, with 18 different weapons to choose from in all.

The game includes multiple play modes. The Scenario mode serves as the story mode, and includes 50 stages, while the Survival mode places you in a never-ending level against endless zombie attacks.

As for the zombies themselves, there are six varieties of “small zombie,” and five types of boss zombies, each of which has their own kind of behavior, and takes a different amount of ammo to kill (for example, the game’s base zombie can be killed in a single shot, while police officers take three – that is, unless you can pull off a headshot).

Be sure to download Zombie Shock while it’s free today.
