iPhone, Mobile

As reported by, today’s free iPhone app is more than a bit of an acquired taste, perfect for a very specific, musical audience.

Guitarists Reference is a guitar chord app that contains not only 3,000 chord voicings, but also contains a database of over 500 scales, over 550 arpeggios, inversions, triads, and more. You can explore the game’s stock chords, selecting chords and watch the app recommend scales for that chord and vice versa – pick a scale and the app will suggest chords.

If you’d like to know the name of a chord, you can manually enter the notes and search through the app’s database, and you can even take a Chord Quiz (which is as close to “gaming” as this app becomes) to test your growing knowledge.

Two last features allow the app to support either a right or left-handed player presentation and the ability to choose from 38 alternate guitar tunings, or create your own, and truly customize the experience.

If you’re a guitar enthusiast, make sure you pick up this app while it’s free today.
