Facebook, Social

Inside Social Games recently took a look at Hot Money, a new game in a long line of “Mafia Wars RPGs” that focuses on three simple things: Fame, Wealth, and Power.

Where in Mafia Wars you consume energy, in Hot Money, you use Latte, with your total amount of available Latte increasing as you level up in the game. “Jobs” are now called “Actions,” and they’ll see you completing various jobs using your available Latte in order to receive funds, experience points and various items.

The jobs are separated based on level, with the first four being available for users level 1-3. There doesn’t appear to be a mastery system associated with these jobs, so you’ll pick them based on the amount of energy you’d like to spend, or based on the rewards you’ll receive on the other side.

Depending on the action you choose to complete, you can raise your level in the game’s three focus areas: Wealth, Fame and Power. As you complete actions, you’ll have a chance to earn various bonuses like Hot Tips, Blackmail, Leaks, Fall Guys and so on. These bonuses can be thought of a loose take on the Stamina system in other games, in that they can be used to attack the Fame, Wealth and Power of other players.

Blackmail, for example, damages another player’s fame. If you complete the attack, not only will your opponent lose fame, but you’ll take it for yourself, raising your own level in that area. To keep players coming back for more, you’ll be able to come back to the game hourly to receive Bailouts, which contain bonuses to help you on your way to success.

The game, surprisingly enough, is lacking in the way of social features, other than in the ability to add friends to your in-game network, which affects your abilities in combat.

Still, the game offers a new take on the basic Mafia Wars ideology – if you’d like to try it out for yourself, head over to the game’s page on Facebook.
