At the E3 Expo, not only did I get to meet the blue blur himself (picture to the left), but I got to play his latest game Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. I was only able to catch a hands-on with a few levels but overall I left with a sense of redemption in Sonic’s future.
Let’s be honest, Sonic’s last few titles have received less than stellar reviews from critics. Sonic 4 is looking to change that in the best way possible by going back to the series roots by being strictly a side-scroller based game with plenty of room for speed and exciting action.
With this remained style, Sonic 4 succeeds in having an excellent focus on what once made the series great: speed mixed with easy action. In that respect, Sonic 4 even improves in several areas with a much easier targeting system. Taking down Dr. Eggman has never been easier.
The few demo levels played showed a level similar to Green Hill Zone from the first game with green and brown being the primary colors. There appeared to be several different paths that a player could take throughout the level with varying difficulty depending on which the player takes.
I’ll leave final judgment for the critics but I definitely enjoyed my time with Sonic 4. Sonic is back, baby later on this year when the game releases.
