After Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night was announced a few months ago, I was very curious to see how the series would translate to the small iPhone screen. At E3 2010, Konami was showcasing the game in the small mobile section of its booth and I whipped at the chance to get a hands-on with it.
Castlevania Puzzle (as I’ll refer to it from now on), clearly showcases its Castlevania roots by having a deep story built in and large dungeons to explore. Inside each dungeon, it’s up to you to try and find the best route out and along the way there are plenty of enemies in your path ready to strike at any moment.
If an enemy engages you, the battle screen appears in a classic Poyo puzzle form. You can rotate the gems by tapping them and smash them down with a quick swipe. Create good combos by matching appropriate blocks and the enemy will be dead in no time.
While my time was limited with Castlevania Puzzle, it was a rather impressive little title. The graphics were very reminiscent of Symphony of the Night and will presumably look even sharper on the new iPhone 4.
We’ll be sure to bring you more news on Castlevania Puzzle as it becomes available. For now, be sure to keep an eye out for our continued E3 coverage right here.
