In this week’s social news, two particularly interesting stories have caught our eye. First, the Miami Dolphins have joined with the New York Jets in their partnership with developer Arkadium on the Facebook app Ultimate Fan, and second, the First Annual Game Developers Choice Online Awards have released their list of official nominees, and have announced ways for the community to become involved as well.
Miami Dolphins Join Ultimate Fan on Facebook
Earlier this month, we took an in-depth look at Arkadium’s new football-themed app on Facebook – Ultimate Fan, which was released in partnership with the New York Jets. The application isn’t a game or even a fantasy football application so much as it is a way for fans of the sport to do what they likely would in the real-world, only here, with the friendship (or rivalry) of other online fans.
The app allows players to predict game scores, hold virtual tailgate parties, and of course, raise their team colors loud and proud for everyone to see. In addition to the branded New York Jets items that were already available to collect in the game, now, the Miami Dolphins have joined the list, as the team has signed on to be another partner for the application.
This news is especially timely considering that the Jets will face the Dolphins in a game on September 26. Items will be released in the game showing off the Dolphins’ colors, allowing fans to show off their team spirit both in the app, as well as in the real world.
Ultimate Fan has grown to over 200,000 users since it’s launch just a couple of weeks ago. If you’d like to join the growing user-base, head over to Ultimate Fan on Facebook.
Game Developers Choice Online Awards Nominees Announced – Vote Now!
This October (October 7, to be exact) the Game Developers Choice Online Awards committee will hold an awards ceremony of the same name, honoring online games, both social and casual, console or mobile, for their excellence in this quickly growing field.
The awards are for achievements in overall Game Design, Visual Arts, Community Relations, Audio, and more, including a category for just Social Networking games (those being the games of Facebook or MySpace). The nominees are a who’s who of up-and-coming and already successful developers in the industry, with games like ngmoco’s We Rule being up for three awards, while NightClub City on Facebook has been honored with three nominations of its own.
Most of the big name developers seem to be represented here, from Zynga and Playfish to Playdom and Digital Chocolate. One particularly interesting nomination comes in the Best Audio category, which includes Conduit Labs’ Music Pets, which was closed down just this month (remember, Zynga purchased Conduit Labs back in August).
While these award winners will be determined by the GDC Online Awards Committee, there is one way for users to make their voices heard as to which online game is the best, and that’s through the Audience Award. This award is entirely open-ended – it’s a write-in ballot on an election slip, if you will. You can vote for any game that you’d like, all by heading over to GDC’s official website.
The deadline to vote is September 24, and you must provide a valid email address so that votes can be tracked. You can feel free to choose from the full list of nominees (available by clicking on this link), or you can write in a nominee of your own. Just be sure to do so quickly, as time is running out!
