As we told you last week, Playfish had been working on adding land expansions to their take on a farming simulator, Country Story. Well, the day for their arrival is at hand, with the game update bringing with it not only the promised land expansions, but also a fairly large redesign to the game’s interface.
First, the visual changes of the game. While the changes are mostly aesthetic, you’ll now have a wider gameplay area, thanks to the fact that the left hand ad bar (that advertized other Playfish games) has been removed. Some of the game’s button locations have also been changed, seeing the Magic Tree icon being moved from vertical menu on the ride side of the screen, to the lower, horizontal bar at the bottom of the gameplay area.
Furthermore, the buttons for zooming in and out on your farm have been tweaked. Now, instead of a vertical slider with three positions, you can click on two different magnifying glasses (one for zooming in, the other for zooming out), and can choose from a variety of perspectives. This, along with the game’s wider screen, causes the game’s biggest difference, in that, at the time of this writing, the game seems to have undergone a serious slowdown, that causes your actions to almost come to a halt when trying to plow or harvest successive crops rapidly. Hopefully this is a minor thing that will be corrected with time.
The zoom buttons, along with the game save and settings icons have been moved to the top right corner of the screen. Here’s a screen of my entire farm, for you to get a better idea of what the changes look like put together.
But now for the real reason for our excitement – land expansions. When you view your land, you’ll see new forested areas to the right and bottom, that, once clicked on, bring up the land expansion menu.
The first expansion available to purchase is titled simply “Stage 2,” and it can only be purchased by those above level 15. Even then, you’ll need to have saved up over 175,000 coins in order to purchase it. Still, the high cost in coins is better than having to wait to have a certain amount of neighbors in the game in order to expand.
Head over to the game’s page to see if you qualify for the new expansion, or to try out the changed interface for yourself.
