Chatroulette is an up-and-coming social networking site of sorts that throws the old adage of “don’t talk to strangers” out of the proverbial window. Not only does the site allow you to meet and talk to strangers, but that’s actually the entire point.
For users with webcams, it’s as simple as logging into the website, clicking on a few buttons and waiting to be paired with a complete stranger from anywhere around the world for chatting… or not chatting.
Of course, one of the biggest concerns with a site like this would be the posting, or in this case, real-time display of inappropriate, adult content.
According to GeekSugar, the site’s disclaimer warns against such activity: “Chatroulette does not tolerate broadcasting obscene, offending, pornographic material and we will have to block users who violate these rules from using our service.” But while that sounds great in theory, the risks of being randomly connected to a… less than desirable individual are very real.
That all being said, the site is an interesting concept. The world is becoming increasingly connected via the internet, and if you could find a legitimate, platonic connection with someone from another country, the site could turn into a high tech version of pen pals. However, until there is some surefire way to avoid those who would like to abuse the system, enter in at your own risk.
