Casual, Videos

While Alawar’s Snark Busters: Welcome to the Club was originally released on Windows at the end of July, Mac users are just getting a taste of the game for themselves, as the developer has ported the game over to the Mac.

We had a chance to go hands-on with this new version of the game, that follows a young girl named Kira Robinson on an adventure that sees her working to join the elite Snark Busters club. To do this, Kira must track down and capture an elusive Snark, a rare creature that only a few people have ever seen, and no one has ever caught.

The game is a hidden object game that incorporates puzzles into the mix, as is the trend with new titles in the genre. You’ll navigate the various rooms searching for the missing pieces to tools or commonplace objects, which can then be used elsewhere in the world to solve puzzles, earn you access to other items, or otherwise advance the story.

As a couple of examples, you’ll need to find the parts to a wrench that will allow you to remove the bolts on a circuit breaker box to turn off the electricity, while in another instance, you’ll find the missing pieces of a set of books, that need to be placed back on the appropriate bookshelf. In this particular example, the books are numbered, so you’d also need to rearrange these new books, and the pre-existing books on the shelf in the correct order to trigger something else happening in the world.

The game contains seven chapters, with the first chapter being a tutorial, as seen in our Frisky Hands-On video below. The seven chapters contain 30 different locations to explore, and dozens of mini-games and puzzles (it appears as though the reassembling of a tool or item counts as a puzzle in the game’s overall total).

The game’s cursor will change as you hover over important items, and the game also contains a nice hint system for those that become stuck. When clicking on the hint button in the bottom right corner of the screen, the next item that you should interact with will be highlighted on the screen. Either that, or, if you need to travel to another location, the appropriate doorway will be highlighted for you as well.

Snark Busters: Welcome to the Club is available for $12.95 from Alawar’s website. A free one-hour trial version of the game is also available to download, if you’d prefer to try before you buy. Be sure to check out our Frisky Hands-On of the game below, to see more of what to expect from the title if you choose to play it (note: the game comes complete with a soundtrack and sound effects, but the game made us unable to record them).
