BREAKING NEWS: Apple Announces Game Center, A Social Game Network for the iPhone

iPad, iPhone, Mobile

At the iPhone OS 4 event, Apple has announced a brand new social game network designed specifically to help players play and challenge their friends. In the new network, you will be able to invite friends, use matchmaking capabilites, view universal leaderboards and rack up achievement points.

There is no other word on how the functionality will work on the new iPhone OS but we do know that it will be an integral part of iPhone OS 4 that will launch in the summer (iPad in the fall). This is an incredible idea and I’m shocked it didn’t exist until now.

Of course, there are alternatives like OpenFeint and Plus+ that largely attempt to do the same thing but this is a built-in implementation. I wonder how this will effect users of these existing networks.
