There are approximately 85 million iPhone/iPod Touch users out there, and approximately 12 million World of Warcraft subscribers too. The amount of crossover between the two audiences has to be somewhat significant and Blizzard realizes this with its announcement of the Auction House app for iPhone.
The app itself allows for players to buy, sell and browse goods available on the market right from their phone, which is a nice add-on to the existing World of Warcraft Armory app already available. The marketplace in the Armory app however, costs an addtional $2.99 a month.
While no release date was given for the Auction House app, Blizzard claims it is currently in the beta stage. The app is speculated to be released later this summer due to the app having its own web page.
On the site, Blizzard comments on the app: “We are considering other services that could help keep players connected to different aspects of World of Warcraft through the web or their mobile devices. As with the Auction House service, these services would be designed to complement the gameplay of World of Warcraft, and would be implemented in a way that doesn’t detract from the gameplay for other players who do not to use the service.”
