Atari Arcade launches with Five Classics

Fri, Nov 27, 2009

Emulators have made most classic videogames widely available on the net, including Atari’s.  Atari has now made available five of their classics available for free online at Atari Arcade.   Asteroids, Battlezone, Crystal Castles, Lunar Lander, and Yar’s Revenge.  It’s notable they are not re-launching them as social games.  For those who had a pang of guilt playing the unapproved versions out on the net you can now clear your conscience.  There are 8-bit dragons to hunt.

The holy trinity of my gaming youth were Adventure, Asteroids, and Space Invaders.   The RPG genre has advanced so far it’s hard to get the same thrill out of Adventure as one once had.  Is fantasy-adventure gaming always dependent on graphics?  Asteroids and (elsewhere available online) Space Invaders hold up better as a simple game mechanic, where later, glitzier remakes dilute instead of enhance the experience.

Still, I did find myself racking my brain for remembering the easter eggs while tackling Yorgle, Grundle, and Rhindle.  Playing Adventure was the first all-nighter (or, at least, substantially-past-my-bedtimer) If the game itself has been surpassed, it’s legacy is deep.  Without Adventure, there is no World of Warcraft.  Enjoy.
