You know, I’ll admit it: despite my admiration for the polish and charm that Rovio puts into its games, I felt dubious when Angry Birds Star Wars first arrived on the scene. The curmudgeonly cynic in me just rolled his eyes, and thought, “great; two powerhouse franchises teaming up for an obvious cash-in.” Of course, then it turned out Angry Birds Star Wars was actually a lot of fun, adding clever twists like force pushes and lightsabers into your arsenal of pig-slaughtering moves. You, too, can get over your doubts today, because the game is temporarily free on both the App Store and Google Play. No Jedi mind trickery here, just a really good suggestion.
The game’s likely being promoted right now to drum up enthusiasm for the sequel, which was just announced today – Angry Birds Star Wars II is coming to a mobile device near you on September 19th with new characters, levels, etc. The big addition, though, is “Telepods”: physical ABSW toys that will allow you to add the portrayed character into your game by placing the toy on/near your tablet.
Have a look:
Neat! Rovio added “At this point we will not comment on rumors or speculation that Jar Jar Binks will be in the game.” So, I think we can expect both franchises to keep getting Rovio’s clever treatment for the foreseeable future.
Go get Angry Birds Star Wars for free, and we’ll check out the sequel in a couple of months. It has been foretold!
