Likely due to the upgrade of the Motorola Droid along with the successful launch of the HTC Droid Incredible, Android 2.1 has taken over as the dominant version of the Android OS, which does help with the whole “fragmentation” issue. The most interesting part, however, is that 2.1 took over just before 2.2 is expected to be announced and possibly released at Google I/O tomorrow.
More and more phones are currently receiving the 2.1 update, but we will have to wait and see what happens at the Google event tomorrow. 2.1 was recently released and updated on the Verizon Droid Eris and Samsung Moment just a week or so ago.
Right now all we can do is speculate about the next version of Android, titled “Froyo” but here’s hoping that it helps the fragmentation still clearly prominent on Android devices.
