An Analysis of iPad Games Using iPhones As Controllers

iPhone, Mobile

Over at Social Times, they are taking a look at the prospect of the iPhone as an iPad game controller and possible implementations of that. This whole concept is completely intriguing as it really could add an element we have yet to see when it comes to how games can be played.

The article states that at least one developer “gets it” with EA Mobile adding support for iPhones in the iPad version of scrabble. In that game, your iPhone acts as your letter stack allowing you to have a completely classic and private game of Scrabble. This implementation came out at launch and still astonishes people when they see how it works.

Perhaps the most innovative part is how easy it is to use. If you already know how to use an iPhone, you can get the different versions of Scrabble working together quickly and easily. To use the iPhone as a game controller for the iPad Scrabble, all you have to do is download the appropriate app.

Other ways that Social Times looked at using the iPhone as a controller: Displaying a full screen NES controller you could use to play side scrolling 2D games with ease, or where your iPhone is a steering wheel in a competitive racing game in which the iPad is simply displaying the track. The possibilities are nearly limitless when you really start thinking about it.
