Twitter hasn’t done any sort of advertising monetization of its massive social network over its four year life. That is, until now. As of yesterday, Twitter has begun running ads on twitter searches for about 10% of the twitter population. The new ads are called Promoted Tweets and will feature well-known businesses such as Starbucks, Best Buy and Virgin America.
Up until now, Twitter has only ever used the farming of tweets for monetization in which it has provided to search engine giants Google and Microsoft. Twitter executives have been very weary about advertising strategies as they do not wish to irritate users. Advertising companies believe that Twitter could provide a better ad experience for the users that rivals Google’s search ads.
As for now, the ads only appear on search and I wouldn’t expect any real complaining unless the ads begin appearing on the timeline.
